Microsoft reveals New Phones

Microsoft Corp set out its ambitions to dominate the consumer electronics market with Windows-powered tablet computers and smartphones designed to beat back advances by Apple Inc and Google Inc.

Microsoft's Kin social-networking smartphone that the software major scrapped last month because sales fell short of the company's expectations

New tablets will be available as soon as they are ready to ship and phones will be on the market this autumn, CEO Steve Ballmer said, setting up a key test of Microsoft's ability to capture the imagination of tech-savvy consumers.

"We're coming full guns," said Ballmer at the company's annual presentation to analysts at its Redmond, Washington headquarters. "We're going to sell like crazy; we're going to market like crazy."

Microsoft has been irked by Apple selling more than 3 million iPads since the launch in April and is working with PC makers Acer Inc, Dell Inc, Toshiba Corp and others to develop so-called tablet or slate devices running the Windows operating system.

"We've got to push right now with our hardware partners," said Ballmer. "They (the new devices) will be shipping as soon as they are ready. It's job No. 1 urgency around here. Nobody's sleeping at the switch." The new tablets will run on Intel Corp chips, said Ballmer, dampening talk that a recent agreement with British chipmaker ARM Holdings Plc heralded a shift toward that company's chip design, which powers the iPad and most smartphones.

A new range of Intel chips expected early next year will give the whole market for tablets a boost next year, Ballmer said, adding that both Windows phones and tablets will have "aggressive" marketing support from Microsoft.

Microsoft employees showed off the new phones running Windows Phone 7, made by handset makers Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Corp, but did not allow photographs of the devices, which are still at the prototype stage. No handset makers have announced a date for commercial launch.

Ballmer said only that they would be coming to market this autumn. The devices have large touch screens, incorporate a Zune music player, email programs and link up with content from Xbox Live, Facebook, and other networks. Ballmer acknowledged Microsoft has lost ground in the phone sector.

"It's probably fair to say we've got a lot of work to do," said Ballmer. "It isn't all going to happen overnight." When asked what would happen if the new Windows phone software was not a success, or a repetition of the ill-fated Windows Vista, Ballmer answered: "It won't be," adding that there was no contingency plan.

World's First 3D Camcorder By Panasonic

The problem of what to watch on a 3D TV will be yours to solve with Panasonic's camcorder for families to film birthdays, baby's first walk and weddings, all in 3D.

Numerous global electronics companies are racing 3D televisions into the shops, hoping a revival of interest in the technology sparked by blockbuster movies such as the sci-fi epic "Avatar" will translate into the public wanting the 3D experience at home. But the relative scarcity of three dimensional content is a stumbling block for the products catching on.

The whole camcorder and lens setup, shown Wednesday, starts at about 170,000 yen ($2,000), far more affordable than professional 3D camcorders, which have been the only types available up to now for 3D filming. The camera looks much like a regular digital camcorder but needs a slightly bigger 3D "conversion" lens that's sold separately. The 3D camcorders go on sale in Japan Aug. 20, and will be available in overseas markets later this year, according to the Osaka-based maker of Viera TVs and Lumix digital cameras. Executive Officer Shiro Nishiguchi said Panasonic sees this year as the opening year for "the 3D era." Panasonic has led in introducing 3D products this year, now offering eight 3D TV models, three 3D recorders and four designs in 3D glasses.

"Content you create yourself is going to be what you want to watch, and so it's going to be a killer content," Nishiguchi told reporters at a Tokyo hall.

The 3D camcorder is expected to help 3D products for homes spread quickly, he said, adding that Panasonic will start selling a 3D lens for digital cameras for still photos later this year.Panasonic demonstrated how the camcorder can film a girl playing on swings, and had reporters check out the film through 3D glasses. The image was colorful, clear and 3D but, as a homemade movie, not quite Avatar.
Panasonic said 3D footage shot on its camcorder can be watched on 3D TVs from rivals such as Sony Corp and Samsung Electronics Co.The technology behind 3D works by sending a different image to the right eye and the left eye, just like the human brain constructs an illusion of depth and perspective with images that come in from the left eye and the right eye.

Although some 3D technology doesn't require special glasses, the one shown requires special 3D glasses.

Kindle Gets Cheaper By Amazon

Amazon.com has launched a cheaper, wireless-only Kindle, betting that the $139 price will turn its latest electronic reader into a mass-appeal device as Apple Inc's iPad gains ground.

The world's largest online retailer and leading e-reader seller also revealed its third generation Kindle, some 21 percent smaller and 15 percent lighter than the previous version, but still priced at $189.
Amazon does not give sales figures for the Kindle, but said last week that its growth rate tripled after it cut its price on the device from $259 and said e-books were outselling hardcover books. Apple has said it sold more than 3 million iPads, starting at $499, since the product was introduced in April.

"At these price points, we're starting to accumulate evidence that this is a mass product," said Chief Executive Jeff Bezos in an interview at company headquarters in Seattle. "This is a very broad audience."
Amazon's sales success with the Kindle has allowed the company to lower the price even as rival devices have entered the market, he said.

"We've sold millions of the prior generation of Kindle and we're going to sell millions of these," Bezos said. "And when you get up into that kind of volume, you're able to do a lot of things with the manufacturing models and supply chain in terms of driving down the cost." The devices, which are now available for preorder, will begin shipping Aug 27.

Amazon has improved the contrast on the screen of its newest Kindles, but the size of the 6-inch reading area remains the same. Page turns are also faster and some 3500 books can now be stored, double the previous amount. Both models have a one-month battery life. Forrester analyst James McQuivey said he had not expected a lower-priced Kindle until later in the year.

"It suggests that Amazon really means it when they say they're in this device business to stay," he said.

LG launches 3D-enabled PC

LG Electronics Inc, South Korea's second-biggest consumer electronics maker has developed 3D capable personal computers.

LG disclosed three new laptop models as well as desktop computers and PC monitors that support 3D movies and contents. The company believes PCs will be a key engine for 3D contents growth, it said.

Its new laptops are priced between 1.6 million won ($1,315) and 1.9 million won, and will account for 30 per cent of the company's laptop lineup in 2011, it said. They will be launched in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa in the coming months. In order to experience the 3D effects, viewers are required to wear glasses, which cause the images to pop out of the screen.

LG Electronics, also the world's No 2 maker of flat-screen TVs, said earlier that it expects to sell 1 million units of 3D TVs this year.

The company is among global consumer electronics makers that are betting the 3D technology will spread beyond movie theaters and create new demand in the industry.

Review: Garmin Nuvi 215 GPS for India

“Go straight, take a left at papey’s fast food joint and then proceed to the right after you reach the market.” In India, where road directions are given based on local landmarks, being a GPS manufacturer/service provider can be quite a task.
Garmin Nuvi 215 GPS

Cars in US and Europe normally have inbuilt GPS devices. But the Indian mass market is yet to get used to the whole concept of satellite navigation.

Garmin satellite navigation units have been in India for some time now. But we have doubts about the progress they have made so far. A good proportion of their clients are people in the radio taxi industry, car & bike rally enthusiasts and one-off travelers who trust satellite navigation over the traditional methods.

Garmin’s Nuvi 215, a navigation device available in India, is not a very fancy or high-end product.

The litmus test for a navigation device is its effectiveness in route mapping on India roads. The condition of our roads, some of which are dug to lay water pipes; some blocked by the electricity board for whatever reason and some unauthorized ones, can make the navigation providers’ job a nightmare.

From the hardware point of view, the Nuvi 215 is a compact device that doesn’t take up much space in your car. With a 3.5-inch screen and weighing less than 145 gm, you can easily slip it into your pocket.

Its touchscreen comes with a 320x240 pixel resolution and the build quality is decent. It is powered via a mini USB port that can be used for transferring data onto its microSD card.

This personal navigation device is an entry-level product and is not exactly loaded to the hilt. But it does have some applications such as Picture Viewer, Unit Converter, World Clock and Calculator. One of the interesting features it offers is the Bluetooth, which can be linked to your mobile handset that lets you use the device as an external mic and speaker for your phone.

However, its touch technology is not up to the mark. Its response is delayed and the user needs to have a lot of patience. The initial time it takes to set up a link with the roving satellites can be very long. But once it makes contact, then every time you switch it on, it manages to come alive pretty quickly.

Buy Cheap Sony NWZ w252 online

Music plays a major role in our lives. Sometimes it serves as a relief from the loud traffic, or it gives you company in an elevator all the way up to the top floor.

Most people keep their music on their phones as it’s easier to carry it around. However, some of us still like to keep our tunes on MP3 players. Ever since the birth of the iPod, it is customary to compare every other player to it.

Sony has brought out its latest addition to its Walkman line of players -- the NWZ W252. The first thing that you will notice is its weird design. The wires form a heart. It’s also available in vibrant colours and looks quite attractive. The headphones make the player itself and are joined together by a magnetic lock.

Once you put them on, it looks as though you are wearing Bluetooth headsets. The fit is a bit uncomfortable and your ears start to ache in half an hour. Personally, I am not a big fan of in-ear headphones. But that doesn’t mean that the audio quality is not great with them. It’s just that the fit just makes it annoying at times.

They tend to fall off no matter what you do. That apart, the design is pleasant and is definitely going to get some eyeballs. The main music controls are on the bottom of the right headphone. The earlier version -- the NWZ 202 -- had a jog dial, but it’s replaced by simpler controls in the NWZ W252.

While the right headphone has the forward, play, rewind, volume and charging port on it, the left one has a single button for shuffle mode. The controls are located in the right position, which makes this player your ideal gym companion. Since the buttons are located so close to each other, you may mistake the volume button for ‘play’. Chances are that you may leave it on shuffle almost all the time, so the controls shouldn’t be a problem at all!

Another interesting feature is the Zappin mode which gives you a preview of every song in your folder till you find the right one. Once you do, just press play! Zappin works like a charm for those who have a billion songs on their player. To get into Zappin mode, hold down the jog lever for about 3 seconds or so. And the most innovative feature is that it has no power button. Just pull the headphones apart and press play.

Top 5 Dual Sim Phones

There is no doubt in the fact that dual-SIM phones can make life a lot easier. With just one single device you can connect to two different networks, have two different numbers and simultaneously talk on those two numbers as well. But, that's not what it is all about. There are some dual-SIM mobile phones out there which offer much more than that.

Below is a list of some top dual-SIM mobile phones that offer technologies you won't even find in top notch phones:

1) Micromax Gamolution (G4):

To describe this phone I need not say anything more than just pointing out the advertisement in which Akshay Kumar almost wrecks a kitchen while playing. The Micromax Gamolution mobile phone is probably the first motion sensor based mobile which can be connected to a computer via Bluetooth dongle for playing games.

Although the games are very basic and are no-where near to what Wii has to offer but still what more can one expect out of a mobile phone.

Along with this motion sensor the Gamolution features a 2.4 inch TFT display, 2 megapixel camera, multi-format AV player and a 4GB expandable memory to keep you happy.

2) Onida F880 (KY Thunder)

The name, KY THUNDER, if you remember reminds about the good o'l Onida KY thunder television. To be specific that was a very popular television to feature a subwoofer for bombastic sound.

Well, this mobile phone is synonymous to that! This mobile phone comprises a special type of speaker and circuitry to enhance the sound output. To be honest there is not much scope for mobile phones when it comes to loudspeaker and sound output, but lately we have seen a couple of phones with amazing sound clarity and output.

Apart from the sound, the phone comes with a 2 inch display screen, 3.5 mm audio jack, multi-format AV player, upto 2GB expandable memory and supports webcam function.

3) Intex iSmart

If you are a big fan of BlackBerry Bold then this blackberryish looking dual-SIM phone is bound to attract you. Intex has tried its level best to copy BB Bold as closely as possible.

The best feature of the iSmart is its track ball, similar to the ones in Blackberry devices. Although the quality of the track ball is not as refined, but so is the price.

With its full QWERTY keypad and the addition of a track ball, the Intex iSmart makes a smart impression overall. The other not so smart features include 2.2 inch TFT display, 1450mAh rechargeable battery, upto 4GB expandable memory, multi-format media player and Java support.

4) Micromax Gravity (GC700)

Even I was a little confused when I first heard the name. But why is a phone being called gravity? It’s because earth’s gravity is the active force behind the functioning of this phone. Yes you heard it right, earth’s very own gravitational pull which keeps us from bouncing off into space.

The phone has dedicated sides for both GSM and CDMA connections and whichever side is towards the ground is active. So if you need to change the network just turn the phone upside down and voila!

Other than gravity, this phone features a 7.11 cm colour TFT display touchscreen (capacitive), 2 megapixel camera, 940mAh rechargeable battery, upto 4GB expandable memory and a multi-format media player.

5) Lava A9

If I were to describe this in fewer words I would have simply described this as smartphone. Not because of its features but for its looks. Sleek metal body, borderless display and lightweight…What not.

The company has rightly decided not to target this to a particular group of people because it has got something for everyone. Media player with 8GB expandable memory for multimedia, EDGE and email support for business on the move and preinstalled Nimbuzz for on the go socializing.

Other features include a 3.2 megapixel camera, 2.4 inch TFT display, Opera Mini browser integrated, 900mAh lithium-ion battery and java support.
